What it's about
Written near the end of her life, the sixth volume is Mason's summing-up: the twenty principles stated plainly, defended, and shown at work in the schools that had adopted them — including working-class schools whose results surprised her critics.
It's the most quoted volume and the most bracing. Where Home Education charms, this one argues — education is a life, the mind feeds on ideas, and children of every class deserve the feast.

Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life
A third of education is the home's honest atmosphere, a third is the discipline of habit, and a third is living ideas. Schools that supply only information supply none of the three.
The mind refuses predigested food
Lectures, summaries, and textbook digests slide off the mind like water. Knowledge must be served in its literary, whole form — and the proof is in what children can tell back.
A liberal education for all
The book's fiercest claim: the generous curriculum is not for privileged children — it worked in mining-town schools, and the children there were hungriest for it.

About the author
Charlotte Mason (1842–1923) was a British educator who spent her life arguing that children are persons and education is an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life. Her six-volume series grew out of lectures to parents in Ambleside, where she founded the House of Education.
